FLOWERS – ORCHID TOURS

FLOWERS – ORCHID TOURS

Colombia’s fauna and flora are world renowned. Simply put, it has the greatest biodiversity of any single country on the planet.

More birds, more butterflies and more orchids. At least 4,270 species of orchids.

The reason Colombia is so hyper-diverse is due largely to the montane areas of the Andean Cordillera, the engine that drives this incredible richness. There are three cordilleras which are split into three geologically and climatically distinct arms.

This incredibly varied topography, with western and eastern slopes and inter-Andean valleys, has provided the arena for an explosion of evolution.

Such a mountain chain is the home of a diverse set of environments, including lowland dry, wet forests and cloud forests in addition to the high altitude Paramos.

Most of the Colombian orchid species are epiphytes, plants that live on the bark of other trees. The cloud forests of the Nariño department in Western Colombia hold the world record for the highest number of epiphyte diversity in the world.

An orchid blooming in its native habitat is one of the miracles of the natural world that every orchid lover should see at least once.

Colombia has more orchid species than any other part of the world and behind the scenes of this world-famous biodiversity are the people who love, cherish and cultivate the Orchids of Colombia.

Throughout Colombia orchid clubs and associations work to help preserve the integrity and quality of the thousands of species that grow in the country. All over the mountainous terrain, there are expositions, fincas (farms), reserves, sanctuaries and national parks that showcase these most exceptional plants, not only in their natural habitat but also cultivated by specialist orchid growers.

Colombian orchids are intriguing, frustrating and at times downright complicated in their growth habits and needs.   A breeder might spend weeks, months or even years nurturing and caring for an orchid plant before it flowers for the first time. Every nutrient and care technique that is employed is carefully recorded in great anticipation of the resulting beauty that will one day emerge in all its splendor and glory.

Contrasting types of orchids have unique and different requirements. Some will enjoy a colder, damp climate while others demand a hot, and humid environment. Even the pH (acidity) of the water can make or break an orchid plant.

In their natural habitats orchids often grow along the edges of tropical forests and jungles. Some thrive in shaded areas, while others prefer direct sunlight.  Orchids come in all shapes and sizes, large and small, sometimes jet black or with astonishing hues of green, yellow, purple and many other glorious shades.

Those who cultivate orchids are a very dignified, proud and enthusiastic diverse group of people from all walks of life, who bond together in their love for these amazing flowers. Orchids in Colombia are more than just a flower, they are promoted and nourished by admirers who are passionate about their furtherance and preservation.

Places to go and experience the wonders of Colombian orchids can be found in many places, but in particular, Romelia Orchids and Birds Farm is one of the finest.
