Catedral de Manizales

Manizales’ Plaza de Bolívar’s south side is dominated by the strange but impressive Catedral de Manizales. Construction began in 1929 using somewhat unsightly reinforced concrete and is among the first churches of its kind in Latin America.

The main tower is an impressive 106m/348’ high, making it the tallest church tower in the entire country. There is a seemingly endless spiral staircase to the top for fantastic views of the city. The inside has an interesting history which is well explained on a guided tour, lasting for around an hour and a quarter.

Museo del Oro Quimbaya, Armenia

This is a most excellent museum that showcases the impressive work of indigenous pre-Columbian Quimbaya goldsmiths. In addition, fine ceramic artifacts and ceremonial items give a detailed vision of how this ancient civilization lived. The main Gold Museum is in Bogotá, but this smaller version is well worth a visit.

Guides give thorough explanations in English about the culture of the Quimbaya people.

Jardín Botánico del Quindío

Armenia has a terrific fifteen-hectare/thirty-seven-acre botanical garden that is home to the best mariposario (butterfly house) in the Eje Cafetero. The 680 sqm/7,320 sq feet butterfly house is shaped in the form of a giant butterfly and houses up to two thousand insects.

There is also a 22m/72’ tall lookout tower, plus ferns, orchids, a guadua (bamboo) forest and an extensive collection of palms. Admission includes the services of a guide – reserve in advance for a tour in English. The best time to visit is in the morning when the butterflies are most active and display amazing colors when in flight.

Parque Los Nevados

One of Colombia’s most awe-inspiring national parks, PNN Los Nevados, encompasses 583 sq km/225 sq m of rugged terrain in the heart of the Colombian Andes. Thanks to the greatly varying altitude range results in many different climates, from humid cloud forests and páramo (high-altitude mountain plains) to glaciers on the highest peaks.

The main peaks, from north to south, are El Ruiz (5321m/17,457’), El Cisne (4750m/15,584’), Santa Isabel (4965m/16,290’), El Quindío (4750m/15,584’) and El Tolima (5215m/17,110’).

The best months to see snow in Los Nevados are October and November and also from March to May. Outside of those months, you are more likely to get dry, windy conditions favorable for trekking and clear views. At times much of the northern section of the park around Nevado del Ruiz can be off-limits because of volcanic activity. Fortunately for nature lovers, the southern part of the park remains open and offers a variety of breathtaking day trips and multiday treks.

The main access points are from Cabaña La Cueva for Nevado de Santa Isabel; Potosí near Santa Rosa de Cabal and the Refugio La Pastora in the Parque Ucumarí, from where trails lead to the magnificent Laguna del Otún; and Valle de Cocora near Salento, where a path heads uphill to the páramo around Paramillo del Quindío (4750m/15.584’).

Acaime Natural Reserve. Acaime is a wonderful area for hiking. The terrain is amazing and the views to die for.

You can also see as many as fifteen different species of hummingbirds feeding from sugar-water dispensers displayed in the lush gardens of a finca. Acaime is around 7km/5 miles from the start of the Valle de Cocora.

Museo de Arte de Pereira (Pereira Art Museum) Arguably the best art museum in the region, this small museum showcases thought-provoking exhibits by Colombian and South American artists. Exhibitions are rotated three or four times per year.

Pueblo Filandia
