Bogotá Country Golf Club

Dating back to 1917, the Club has occupied several different locations before settling in its current position in the north of Bogotá.

One of the more traditional clubs in Colombia, Country Club de Bogotá has two 36-hole courses designed by John Van Kleek, one named Fundadores and the shorter Pacos and Fabios.

The Colombian Open has been held here seven times. A par 72 course, the Fundadores layout is just over 7,200 yards. Set out as two returning nines, the course has a lot of water in play as it weaves around artificial lakes.

The par 5 18th, 570 yards from the furthest tee of Fundadores course, is the iconic hole of this fabulous club. With water to the right of the green, the second shot has a rewarding risk. A good approach to the green allows one to have an eagle or birdie option. However, a poor shot will be harshly punished and a high score on the card becomes inevitable.

The par five 18th. demands an aerial approach over a small lake to the home green. This is the perfect hole for the definition of a championship course.

Other feature holes include the first of the par threes at the 5th. , played over a pond to a heavily bunkered green, the 9th.  where water threatens both the tee shot and the approach shot and the dog-legged 10th. where the tee shot has to cross a lake in front of the clubhouse.

The Pacos and Fabios course also has 18 holes and is par 71, with a total distance of 5,970 yards and a ladies’ course of 5,674 yards.  Tee shots are extremely important in this course. The doglegs can be sharp and if one cannot work the tee shot, a driver can go through the fairway.  Unless you are deadly accurate with the driver, a more strategic approach of irons or fairway woods off many of the tees is likely the best plan.

If you manage to place your tee shot on the fairway, a fairly tough task, the approaches are not that difficult. There is little to no elevation change on the course to speak of, barring a couple of feet from tee to fairway or vice versa. There are many places where the overhanging trees on the fairway can force one to have to hit a curveball around them or a punch shot under them. Once again, this is a shot-maker’s course.

The greens at Country Club de Bogotá are tour quality. They hold shots perfectly, yet roll fast and true. If you have any control over your approach shots, keep them below the hole, as downhill putts on these greens are very difficult.

The undulations of the greens are not extreme though there are a few with double tiers. The speed of the greens makes two-putting difficult if putting from one tier to another. The condition of Country Club de Bogotá is fantastic and the course is a very good test of one’s complete golf game, from tee to green.

Accuracy is one of the most important characteristics necessary to play well at Country Club de Bogotá. Given the large number of trees on both courses, it soon becomes obvious why this is so.
The distance of each hole is not the issue to score par or better. This is thanks to the fact that the ball in Bogotá travels on average ten percent further about a golf course that is at sea level.

The maintenance of the course is to a very high standard. At the Country Club de Bogotá, sustainability and respect for the environment are fundamental values. They are proud to be responsible guardians of the fauna and flora that embellish the property. In turn, the Club has become a haven for multiple species that make up the natural wealth and biodiversity of Bogotá.

Country Club de Bogotá is very exclusive and extremely hard to play if you are not a member. However, the Club does have an agreement with other Golf Clubs at a national and international level, both as a sending and receiving Club. When a member from another Golf Club has an exchange with the Country Club de Bogotá, they may play at the Club in Bogotá.

Alternatively, Bnb Colombia Tours can arrange a program for visitors to enjoy this fabulous course.

Club El Rincón de Cajicá

In 1957 a group of young Colombians with golfing ambitions purchased a modest plot of land in Cajicá, to the north of Bogotá. Initially, they created a basic 9-hole course, then a few years later, after acquiring more land, engaged the services of none other than Robert Trent Jones to construct a world-class 18-hole course. Thus Club El Rincón was born.

Now it ranks amongst the best in the country and is one of the most prestigious courses in the land. It has even been considered among the finest fifty in the world.

Bounded on the eastern side by the Bogotá River, Club El Rincón’s tree-lined fairways lie over a pleasantly undulating landscape in two returning loops, each of which features several small water hazards. Holes 6 to 9 on the front nine and holes 13, 14, and 16 on the back nine.

The designer factored in the elevation of the course at over 8,000 feet above sea level when he laid out the holes. To compensate for a 10% increase in ball flight due to the high altitude, he extended the overall length to 7,542 yards for the championship tees. Only one of the ten par fours (the left doglegged 4th) plays to less than 400 yards from the tee.

The par three 7th is the signature hole on the course. A lake lies between the tee and a stone-fronted green, which is circled by sand, so there is little room for error here at all. Tee shots that are too short will end up wet, whilst over-hit or wayward efforts will almost certainly find one of the three surrounding bunkers.

One of the most important events ever played at El Rincón was the World Cup in 1980, with the participation of the most important golfers of the time. El Rincon is considered one of the finest golf courses in Colombia and South America. Chosen among the hundred best in the world by Golf Magazine in 1980, the par 3 16th hole appears as one of the best five hundred holes in the world.

By playing on this course, you will take away an unforgettable experience and have had the great privilege of being able to combine the exceptional climate of the páramo (high savanna), the amazing landscapes, and the incredible quality of this course.

It is spectacular, difficult, long and highly varied. Slightly undulating with some depressions leading to higher elevations.
