PUEBLOS PATRIMONIO BUGA
(Colombian Heritage Towns: Buga)

Colombia is full of stunning little pueblos filled with history, beautiful architecture and local charm. The Colombian Tourism Ministry has created a network of eighteen Pueblos Patrimonio (Heritage Towns), bringing them together under one umbrella to promote the best of the country’s heritage.

One hour north of Cali, the salsa-infused capital of Valle del Cauca, can be found Guadalajara de Buga, a quiet pueblo, founded in the 16th century.

Buga, as Colombians fondly call it, is one of the oldest cities in the country and a celebrated pilgrimage site for the millions who flock to the Basílica del Señor de los Milagros to pray to a strangely burnt crucifix displayed above the central altar.

Even though the Basilica is Buga’s main tourist attraction, this picturesque town offers more than just religious tourism. Exploring the historic centre, visited twice by Liberator Simón Bolívar, you will understand why Buga is a Pueblo Patrimonio.

This diverse town of 115,000 boasts well-preserved colonial and Republican-era architecture from Colombia’s New Granada period.

The House of Culture, Municipal Theatre and Palace of Justice, as well as fifteen churches, are just a few landmarks that make Buga such a charming place.

Municipal Theatre

Buga is one of the oldest municipalities in the country, and it is renowned for its rich history, religious fervour and incredible scenery.

The city perfectly combines colonial charm with vibrant modern culture, offering visitors a unique experience that includes pilgrimages to the Basílica del Señor de los Milagros and exploration of its well-preserved historic centre. Also, there are wonderful outdoor experiences on the outskirts of the pueblo. With its welcoming atmosphere and such a wide range of attractions, Buga is a compelling destination for those seeking a blend of spirituality, history and nature.

CLOTHING

Given the warm temperatures and humidity, it is advisable to wear lightweight cotton clothes. Good quality, sturdy footwear is the best, especially if you plan to do some hiking outside the pueblo. High-factor sun screen and wide-brimmed hats are the way to go.

THINGS TO DO AND SEE

The primary draw of Buga is, of course, the Basílica del Señor de los Milagros, an important Roman Catholic church. This basilica is a major pilgrimage site, famous for housing an image of Christ, known as the Señor de los Milagros, believed to possess miraculous properties.

Thousands of pilgrims and tourists visit this basilica annually, especially for religious events and festivals. The streets around the Basilica are full of small tiendas selling catholic images, bracelets, necklaces, and so much more.

It is a very curious place to be, especially if you are non-religious. The devotion of some of the visitors can feel a little bizarre, yet witnessing a deep faith is somehow beautiful to witness.

The neo-Gothic architecture of the basilica and its spiritual atmosphere make it an amazing experience. Be sure to go to the Capilla de la Milagrosa (Chapel of the Miraculous) too, where many leave their thanks and petitions.

The Historic Centre of Buga is full of well-preserved colonial buildings that transport you to the past. The streets of Buga are lovely to walk around, not too busy and offer a great mix of culture, history and daily life.

Amble along the cobbled streets to visit the Cathedral of San Pedro Apóstol and appreciate the well-preserved colonial architecture. The myriad of cafés offer divine coffee and also delicious empanadas, pandebono and other delicacies. The Municipal Theatre is a glorious building with a far-reaching cultural program.

The Museo del Señor de los Milagros is a museum dedicated to the history and devotion of the Señor de los Milagros. There is a collection of ex-votos, offerings and testimonials from people who have experienced miracles. It is a fascinating place to further understand the deep faith and religious culture of the region. The museum also features temporary exhibits and educational activities suitable for all ages.

Just an hour west of Buga lies Lago Calima, a reservoir that has become a very popular destination for water sports and nature lovers.

The constant blowing of a strong wind makes it highly suitable for wind and kite surfing. Also too rowing boats are available or simply enjoy a relaxing day in the sun by the water. The lake’s surroundings also offer accommodation options and restaurants.

Lago Calima

Wildlife and flora are plentiful in the area, and visitors can walk over to the Calima Archaeological Museum (a few minutes’ walk from Lake Calima) to learn about the history of the first settlers and the Amerindian cultures of Llama, Yotoco, Sonso and Malagana.

Have a picnic in this wonderful setting in the green areas or indeed camp under the stars. Laguna el Sonso is only a 15-minute drive from Buga, allowing visitors to have an amazing appreciation of forest birds.

The extensive lagoons and marshes allow rainforestry to flourish, and of course, it has become a bird’s paradise. If you like birding, here you should be able to spot some common potoo, crimson-crested woodpeckers and even dwarf cuckoos. Fish, reptiles and other mammals are drawn here as well. You may be surprised what you can see.

For a bird’s eye view of the town, climb the 134 steps of the Monumento El Faro, the only lighthouse in Colombia not used for operations at sea. It is dedicated to Alejandro Cabal Pombo, one of Buga’s most illustrious residents.

Parque Cabal is where old-timers sit on benches under the cooling shade of the trees, talking to friends, unhurriedly drinking their afternoon tinto (coffee). Be on the lookout for the huge iguanas that hide on the leafy branches.

A day excursion to visit the old sugarcane plantations to see how the Colombian elite lived in the 19th century is a tremendous experience. Hacienda El Paraíso, a lovingly restored manor house, has been converted into a museum.

It provides an insight into Valluna life, complete with literary connections, being the setting for Jorge Isaacs’ romantic-era novel Maria.

FAIRS AND FESTIVALS

Buga is also known for its festivals and cultural events. One of the most important celebrations is the Feast of the Lord of Miracles, held in September, which attracts large numbers of the faithful and tourists from all over the world.  During this festival, the city is filled with religious activities, parades, music and traditional dances.

LOCAL GASTRONOMY

Buga’s delicious gastronomy is another reason to visit this charming pueblo. Typical dishes of the region include sancocho de gallina, chuleta valluna and of course pandebono, a delicious yuca bread.  Additionally, Buga offers a great selection of delightful restaurants and cafes where visitors can enjoy traditional Colombian cuisine.

Some interesting traditional dishes worth trying:

Torta de pastores is a traditional Colombian cake originating from the Valle del Cauca region. It is made with a combination of rice pudding (arroz con leche), crumbled sponge cake, butter, cheese, eggs, raisins, port or muscat and warming spices such as nutmeg and cinnamon.

The ingredients are mixed together and the combination is baked until the top develops a golden brown colour. There are a few variations on this cake, so conserved lemons, figs and oranges are sometimes added into the mix. The cake can be served warm or cold and it is especially popular during the festive Christmas season.

Arroz atollado is a Colombian rice dish originating from the Valle del Cauca region.
The main ingredients include rice, stock, oil, pork, sausages, red and yellow potatoes and peas. This Colombian risotto is usually combined with hogao tomato sauce, made from onions, garlic, tomatoes, cilantro and cumin.

Once the dish has been fully cooked, it is served with avocados, slices of hard-boiled eggs, plantain chips and chopped cilantro.

Lulada is a cold, refreshing drink originating from El Valle made with mashed lulos, lime juice, water, sugar and ice. Lulo, also known as naranjilla in Ecuador and Panama, is an exotic fruit popular in Colombia.

It has a light, citrusy flavour and is very common in Colombian cuisine. Lulada is the perfect combination of sweet and tart, has a thick consistency and can be served with a shot of vodka.
