PUEBLOS PATRIMONIO El JARDÍN
(Colombian Heritage Towns: El Jardín)
Colombia continues to stand out as a major tourist destination, thanks to its abundance and variety of natural resources, culture, gastronomy and landscapes. These range from warm beaches with crystal-clear waters to snow-capped mountains, moors, rainforests and even deserts.
The idyllic small Colombian pueblo (town) with a pleasant and warm climate, El Jardín, is replete with colourful colonial buildings, horse-drawn carriages meandering the cobblestone streets and an overall vibrant, authentic energy that permeates the Antioquia region. The pueblo is surrounded by lush green rolling mountains, banana trees, rivers, streams and coffee plantations.

Part of Colombia’s Heritage Towns, this municipality is known for colonial architecture, flower-filled balconies, and coffee culture. In addition, El Jardín was selected as the Best Town in Colombia for Rural Tourism in 2024.
Long before the Spanish arrived, the El Jardín area was home to the indigenous Catíos of the Chamíes ethnic group. El Jardín has a rich history that dates primarily back to the colonial era. The pueblo’s rich coffee roots, culture, and natural beauty make it a captivating spot for history lovers and travellers. Spanish settlers founded El Jardín in the late 1800s, attracted by its fertile land and coffee-friendly climate.
Indalecio Peláez was the official founder of the pueblo and the surrounding area in 1863. Like many fables in Colombia, the pueblo’s name blends imagination with fragments of reality. Legend says the founders, awed by the valley’s beauty and rivers, named it El Jardín—Antioquia’s garden.
Colombia buzzes with vibrant chaos—from lively carnivals and crowded cobbled streets to Bogotá’s nonstop cultural energy. Yet now and then, you’ll find a peaceful spot where life slows to coffee and conversation. A corner of Colombia where the stresses of modern life refuse to intervene. Now and then, a quiet place emerges—where time lingers over coffee and unhurried conversation. The town’s charm isn’t in activities like hiking or its small museum, but in its tranquil, inviting atmosphere.
CULTURE
El Jardín is also a place where Antioquian culture and traditions are alive and thriving. On weekends, the plaza becomes vibrant with music, dancing and social events. Be sure to sample some of the local delicacies, such as arepa de chócolo and the stimulating traditional Antioquian Aguardiente.
In August, enjoy the Fiestas de la Rosa, celebrating the town’s emblematic flower with parades, concerts, and culture. This festival is an excellent opportunity to learn and appreciate the customs and charm of the local people.
PLACES OF INTEREST
The heart of El Jardín is the Plaza El Libertador, the most important feature of the pueblo, a vibrant and lively place that reflects the essence of those who live there. Amidst the brightly colored colonial buildings, a fountain is surrounded by eight small gardens arranged in flower petals with glorious rose beds.
This site, which was declared a National Monument in 1985, is the place where the locals like to meet. The plaza itself is immaculate. Residents take great care to maintain the fountains, benches and stone-walled rose gardens of the plaza in perfect condition.
Plaza
Every day, merchants and restaurant owners bring dozens of hand-painted tables displaying reds, yellows, and blues into the plaza. The people of El Jardín gather in the plaza to exchange news and gossip over coffee, filling it with a gentle hustle and bustle, often interrupted by the clatter of horses’ hooves.
Over time, small touches like attractive street lighting have improved the area, allowing the day to extend into the evening. Dominating the skyline with its dark, neogothic outline is the Basilica Menor de la Inmaculada Conception, a magnificent church that imposes its unmissable presence on the plaza below.
The Basilica is one of the most recognizable icons of El Jardín. This majestic church, built from carved stone, stands out for its imposing architecture and interior decorated with stained glass and delicate wooden details. It is a place of peace and reflection, perfect for those seeking a moment of spirituality. However, the mountain-framed church, although impressive, is not El Jardín’s greatest feature. Rather, it is the plaza itself that really contains the secret to this town.

La Garrucha is a totally unique means of transport in El Jardín. A small, wooden hand-created cable car connects the pueblo to a mountain farm. Along the way, there are stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. For an exciting, authentic and unusual experience that will give you a different perspective of El Jardín, be sure not to miss the ride.
The Cueva del Esplendor is a natural wonder hidden in the mountains of El Jardín. This amazingly impressive geological phenomenon combines a cave with a waterfall that descends from a hole in the dome, creating an astonishing visual spectacle. The hike to reach the cave is quite challenging, but the reward is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Cueva del Esplendor
Cueva del Esplendor is just one of many stunning waterfalls in the region, including Cascada La Escalera and Salto del Angel. For solo travellers, it’s best to visit these waterfalls with Bnb Colombia Tours, who provide a jeep for the terrain. This enables you to visit several falls in one day. It is, of course, also possible to hike to them from the pueblo, but do not go solo. Some trails, like the one to Chorro Blanco, may not be obvious and are rarely visited.
Birding
The lush landscape of the rolling hills surrounding El Jardín makes it a haven for tropical birds. The Ventanas Road is a birdwatcher’s paradise, offering diverse species, stunning views, and access to a picturesque Andean town. This road from El Jardín to Rio Sucio winds through beautifully preserved humid montane forests.
It’s a haven for endemic species like the Yellow-eared Parrot, Chamí Antpitta, and Black-and-chestnut Eagle, among others. With over 400 species reported, the road and surrounding area have become a major birdwatching hotspot in the Western Andes.
Keep your eyes and ears open for a sighting anytime you are hiking. If you do not have a lot of birding skills (patience), there are two miradors (viewpoints) to see stunning birds of El Jardín.

HOW TO GET TO EL JARDÍN
El Jardín is located about 3 hours by private vehicle south of Medellín, making it an accessible destination for a weekend getaway. A visit here is really a must, but it is somewhat of a long return day trip from Medellín, although possible. Much better to inhale Jardin’s ambience by spending at least one night in the pueblo. You can also get there by bus from the Terminal del Sur in Medellín, enjoying a scenic drive through the mountains.
El Jardín is a pueblo that can be easily explored on foot or on the back of a motorcycle taxi. However, El Jardín is not a place to be in a rush following a guidebook. The residents of El Jardín will be delighted to receive you and they are at your disposal, so relax, enjoy the atmosphere and remember that nothing brightens the world like a steaming, fresh cup of locally-produced coffee, especially when served at a brightly coloured, hand-painted table. El Jardín is one of those hard-to-find places that you do not need a plan to enjoy.
The laid-back pace of life in El Jardín is perfect for travellers looking to decompress. The pueblo invites you to slow down, soak in its beauty and experience true, authentic Colombian charm.
