HELICOPTER TOURISM IN COLOMBIA

The use of helicopters for tourist travel in Colombia is becoming more and more popular. The topography and the lack of infrastructure favor helicopter transport immensely.

An helicopter can land almost anywhere in the country, provided it has permission from the local landowner

Generally a more expensive but less time-consuming alternative, this service caters to the more adventurous and those preferring luxurious travel.

All flights are performed by companies duly licensed by the Colombian Civil Aviation Authority.

Colombia has sixteen international airports with the principal airport being El Dorado International Airport, Bogotá.

One of the most important aspects of flying helicopters is the respect given to the topography of the country.

Depending on the altitude of the terrain, the operation of a helicopter can be somewhat restricted with helicopters, having a greater capacity at sea level as opposed to high altitudes.

In Bogotá, for example, at an altitude of almost 2,700m/8,858’ above sea level, the capacity of a helicopter is considerably reduced. A machine with a capacity for ten people can only carry about half of them. In another city such as Cartagena, the helicopter can fly at full capacity at an altitude of only 2m/7’ above sea level.

In Colombia, certain areas are not allowed to be entered or flown over, including military areas, penitentiaries and volcanoes, as well as certain indigenous areas such as La Guajira and parts of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.

The cost of the services offered by helicopter companies for tourism in Colombia varies depending on a number of factors.

The average price for a one-hour helicopter service from Colombian companies ranges from 1,800,000 to 8,000,000 Colombian Pesos (US$460 to $2,055).

These values depend on how many people are flying, where you are located, the type of helicopter selected and the route to be flown.
