Las Orquídeas (The Orchids) National Natural Park

Las Orquídeas (The Orchids) National Natural Park is a protected area located on the western slopes of the Cordillera Occidental mountains in Colombia. It was established in 1974 and covers an area of 287.53 square kms/111 sq. miles. The park is home to an impressive variety of plant and animal life, including over 200 species of orchids, hence the name of the park.

Location and Accessibility

Las Orquídeas (The Orchids) National Natural Park is to be found in the department of Antioquia. It is bordered by the municipalities of Frontino, Urrao and Abriaquí. The park is accessible by road from the town of Frontino. There is also a small airstrip in the park that can be used by chartered planes.

Climate and Topography

Las Orquídeas (The Orchids) National Natural Park is located in a mountainous region. The park has a considerable range of elevations, from 300m/984´ to 3,450m/11,390´ above sea level. This diversity of elevations creates a multiplicity of different ecosystems within the park, including three types of forest, lowland, premont, montane and páramo grassland.

The climate in Las Orquídeas (The Orchids) National Natural Park is tropical. The average annual temperature is 22c/71f. The park receives an average annual rainfall of 3,000-4,000 mls/118 – 157” with the wet season in the park running from April to November.

Indigenous history

The area that is now Las Orquídeas (The Orchids) National Natural Park was once home to the Embera Katio indigenous people. The Embera Katio are a tribe who have lived in the Chocó region of Colombia for centuries.

They are known for their traditional way of life, which is based on hunting, fishing and gathering. The Embera Katio were forced to leave their ancestral lands in the park in the 1970s when the park was established. However, they continue to live in the surrounding area and they play an important role in the management of the park.
