Medellin Greens: Where Golfing Dreams Take Flight

We work with and recommend booking flights with www.kiwi.com

Medellín is one of the finest cities in all of Colombia and the golf is no exception. It is possible to enjoy a wonderful day of golf in one of the most dynamic cities in Latin America.

Medellín has a golfing tradition of over seventy years, with international PGA professionals like Camilo Villegas and others having played here on golf courses including Club El Rodeo and Club Campestre.

There are three private professional golf courses in Medellín, one within the city and two on the city outskirts, all with 18 holes, Par 72 and very well laid out.

Within Medellín and only fifteen minutes from El Poblado Park, is Club Campestre El Rodeo. This is the most charming and beautiful of golf courses with 18 holes, par 72 and 6,808 yards in length. Fabulous views of the City of Eternal Spring are a bonus.

Less than an hour away on the city outskirts are two other courses, Club Campestre Lanogrande and Club La Macarena.

La Macarena golf course has 18 holes, par 72 and 6,792 yards in length, while Club Campestre Llanogrande has 18 holes, par 72 and 6,404 yards in length.

Given that Medellín is known as the City of Eternal Spring thanks to the glorious weather year-round, with average temperatures rising to no more than 82f/28c, which makes for the perfect conditions for the game of golf.

Club Campestre Llanogrande

The 18-hole Llanogrande course at Club Campestre Medellín is just one of many sporting options available to members of this expansive two hundred acre campus located on the outskirts of the city centre.

Founded in 1924, the golf club has been developed over the years along with an enormous equestrian center, an adjacent lake supporting water sports, tennis courts, swimming pools and a luxury hotel.

Extending to 7,100 yards from the initial tee to the final green, the course plays to a par of 72, with holes laid out as two returning nines. Water comes into play at around half the holes on the card, especially at the 10th., 11th. and 12th. , which are routed around the edges of the large lake. An unusual feature that is to be found here is that around several tee boxes, especially on the front nine, are sandy waste areas, that to be honest are more cosmetic than critical.

Highlight holes include the par four 3rd. , skirting a pond on the inside of the dogleg as the fairway veers left; the par three 8th. with an out of bounds area to the left of the hole; the par five 11th. featuring the lake to the right of the fairway and a pond to the front left of the green and last but not least, the left bending par four 18th.  which requires an accurate tee shot through a very narrow chute of trees, followed by a long approach to a heavily sand-protected home green.

Llanogrande is a characteristic flat and long course, which respects the original contours of the terrain. Many trees with an average height of 7-8m/23-26 feet make up the vegetation around the course. Even though the greens are large and more or less level, you should not be overconfident, but play strategically and carefully, because obstacles such as the lakes are very well arranged to be challenging.

The course hosts many local, national and international tournaments and is considered one of Colombia’s premier courses.

Club Campestre El Rodeo

The exclusive El Rodeo Club has two venues to offer to its members. One that serves Medellín itself in the city and another in the municipality of Rionegro, with a more rural atmosphere, La Macarena.

There are two 18-hole golf courses with high biodiversity, unique landscapes and great variety.

To play well on El Rodeo Course, you must take into consideration the significant slope of the terrain, as the course is located on the side of a mountain, with an incredible undulating contour. For this reason, the ball is usually at a higher or lower level than your feet, so it can very easily take a path to the right or left of your target. You should bend your knees a little more to counteract the slope.

The falls and directions of the grass on the greens are due to the passage of water, as when it rains it is usually heavy. Consequently draining is closely related to the slope of the terrain.

When putting, take this inclination into account to establish your falls and the intensity of the strokes.

The most striking thing about this course is that you see planes passing very close to you, as Olaya Herrera Airport is located alongside. From holes 2 and 17 you can see the complete runway, while to the right of the last hole, there is a large area planted with flowers, large trees and bushes, which is a cemetery. These are highly unusual views of a golf course that add singularity to the El Rodeo Course.

The topography of La Macarena Course is very diverse. There are narrow as well as ample fairways which can deceive depending on whether they are level or inclined. Many tall trees impede the sight of the greens, all of which vary significantly in size, contour and structure.

Interesting obstacles such as bunkers, water hazards and the many trees are strategically placed to influence your approach to the game. The wind effect certainly has to be seriously considered.

Inexperienced players should concentrate on the game and not let themselves be intimidated by these adversities. The most complex holes are the 2nd. and 9th., but more experienced players will enjoy the challenge and demanding nature of the course.
