MOMPOX JAZZ FESTIVAL

Mompox doesn’t exist. Sometimes we dream about her, but she doesn’t exist, so wrote Gabriel García Márquez of this remote, laid-back pueblo on the banks of the Rio Magdalena.
The Mompox Jazz Festival was launched just over a decade ago and has become a key driver of the transformation of the pueblo, blending the vibrant traditions of jazz with the unique rhythms and flavours of Colombia’s Caribbean coast.
International artists like Spanish guitarist Daniel Casares, Colombian pianist Oscar Acevedo and Cuban salsa sensation Fresto have headlined the five-day event filled with the fusion of jazz, cumbia, salsa, flamenco and Caribbean beats. What began as a celebration of jazz has evolved into a broader cultural showcase, with thousands of visitors experiencing the music and the region’s arts, cuisine and craftsmanship. Visitors are immersed in the full spectrum of Mompox’s cultural heritage. Between rhythms, gastronomy, art and fashion, the Mompox Jazz Festival is a celebration of life itself, of historical roots and a future full of hope. Those who attend do not just experience a cultural event; they live an experience that connects them with the soul of Mompox, a pueblo that continues to shine with the light of its traditions and the echo of its dreams.
The Mompox Jazz Festival was first held in 2012 as an initiative by the local government and the cultural sector to promote tourism and revitalize the pueblo, taking advantage of its rich cultural and historical heritage. The main objective was to create an event that would not only attract jazz lovers, but also put Mompox on the map as a cultural tourist destination.

Rather like its melange of architecture, the jazz festival is highly anticipated each year and features a mix of styles, with porro, bachata, merengue and others helping to always create an impressive line-up.
Over the years, the festival has grown in magnitude and prestige, attracting internationally renowned musicians and an ever-widening audience. During the days of the festival, the most emblematic plazas, churches and corners of Mompox become open-air stages where jazz concerts are presented, mixed with other genres such as blues, soul and traditional Colombian music. In addition, due to the boom and relevance that this festival has obtained, the Jazz Park was built, in which the XI edition of the Mompox Jazz Festival was held in 2023.
The pueblo is now highly regarded for its annual jazz festival. Throughout the city during the festival, there is a big focus on education and evolution as seminars are held to help empower its young musicians.

The festival not only focuses on music, but also offers a complete cultural experience, with parallel activities such as workshops, art exhibitions and gastronomic fare, which allow visitors to immerse themselves in the cultural richness of the region.

During the festival, attendees are able to enjoy a varied programme of open-air concerts, fashion shows, cultural activities and the rich gastronomic and artisanal offering that characterises the region. In addition to being a meeting point for music and culture lovers, the festival stands out for its commitment to local talent and its contribution to the development of the creative industry in the Colombian Caribbean.
