Enjoy the Romantic Vibe of the Walled City During Your Cartagena Honeymoon
Cartagena is most well known for its historic city walls, one of the most complete examples of colonial-era city walls anywhere in the world. Inside those walls of the old city, you’ll find narrow streets nestled between gorgeous colonial-era mansions with their flower-draped balconies overhead.

Choose to take it all in renting bicycles, doing a romantic carriage tour, or simply strolling hand in hand. Or get the full experience and do a private tour, where you’ll have the opportunity to learn all the stories those walls have to tell as well as see some of the other top sites to visit.
Regardless of how you enjoy it, the historic city center of Cartagena is sure to captivate you. Be sure to cool off with ice cream, a refreshing limonada de coco, or, if you want to feel like nearly broke, young lovers again, some shaved ice from one of the vendors using old-timey hand-cranked machines you can find in the plazas and parks around town.

After exploring the Walled City, be sure to walk over to the equally historic district of Getsemaní. Home to much of the city’s free artisans during the colonial period, it’s considered the cradle of Cartagena’s culture and offers plenty of pretty, colorful architecture of its own. In particular, you’ll want to get some memorable photos in the colorful umbrella-covered Callejón Angosto.
Don’t Miss the Lovely Sunsets While on Honeymoon in Cartagena
What’s more romantic than holding hands and watching a gorgeous sunset? How about one with the lovely colonial city and the Caribbean Sea as a backdrop?
Taking in the sunset together has to be one of the top items on your list of things to do on a honeymoon in Cartagena. Best of all, there’s no shortage of good spots to do it, and there is a beautiful one every day!

Probably the most well-known sunset spot in Cartagena is Café del Mar, located atop the wall itself, giving you a direct view of the sun going down over the Caribbean. Just be sure to get there early to get a good table.
If you do miss out, you can always still enjoy the music and view from the adjacent area of the wall, known affectionately as Café al Lado. Or, since you are on your honeymoon in Cartagena after all, feel like teenagers again and snuggle up together in one of the openings for cannons looking out to see along the lower parts of the wall.
For another amazing view, consider enjoying a sunset drink at the rooftop bar of Hotel Movich. From there, you’ll see the sun go down across the bay with the modern skyscrapers of Bocagrande in the background. A sunset cruise on the bay itself makes for another amazing sunset experience.
Wining and Dining on Your Cartagena Honeymoon
You’ll want to make sure you’re treating yourselves during your honeymoon in Cartagena. There are tons of great dining options in Cartagena. Some of the best include Restaurante Alma, Marea by Rausch, and Club de Pesca, the latter two of which have great patio seating overlooking the bay.

As far as what to eat, the fresh seafood is unsurprisingly the star of Cartagena’s cuisine. The fried fish and coconut rice plate is a great lunchtime option, especially at the beach.
For dinner, try seafood rice, the seafood stew known as cazuela de mariscos, a local favorite, or a fish filet smothered in shellfish, aka filete a la marinera. Don’t forget all that seafood is an aphrodisiac, all the more reason to enjoy plenty of it during your Cartagena honeymoon!

If you’re looking for a good place to have post-dinner cocktails, in addition to Hotel Movich’s rooftop and Café del Mar mentioned above, the rooftop bars at Townhouse and Buena Vida Marisquería are nice and offer some creative cocktails, as does El Arsenal Rum Box. To mingle with the locals, consider enjoying a beer at the iconic Donde Fidel located just by the Clocktower or from the corner store at the popular hang-out spot of Plaza de la Trinidad in Getsemaní.

Get Your Groove on with Some Dancing
You’ll definitely want to make sure you pack your dancing shoes for your honeymoon in Cartagena. The city has a vibrant nightlife, and you’ll be able to go out for some close dancing to get your newlywed selves all hot and bothered.

If you want to learn the uniquely Cartagenero Afro-Colombian inspired dance moves of Champeta, check out Bazurto Social Club. In addition to frequent live music, they do several mini-dance lessons throughout the night.
For salsa, be sure to visit the famous Club Havana. For a mix of house music, Mister Babilla, Fragma, and Tu Candela are some of the most famous discos in the city.
Not much for dancing? For a chiller night out, consider the downstairs bar at Townhouse, which has the 1920s-30s atmosphere, complete with jazz and a burlesque show or the interesting, infused concoctions at Al Quimico.
Get Your Tans on at the Beach
You’ll definitely want to make sure you come back from your honeymoon in the Caribbean with some nice tans to show off. The year-round beach weather also means regardless of when you plan your trip, you’ll still be able to include the beach on your list of things to do on a honeymoon in Cartagena!
The beaches in Cartagena proper are ok, but they tend to be crowded, and they don’t offer near the beauty of the beaches outside the city. In particular, the Rosario Islands, located about an hour off the coast of Cartagena offer gorgeous, crystal clear waters and are not to be missed.

The best way to see them is a day tour that will take you through the islands before stopping to let you enjoy However, you could also consider spending a few nights in the islands for a more exclusive experience. You are on your honeymoon! There are also nice options available both for day passes and staying over on the Island of Barú and Tierra Bomba.
